Professionalism
U.S. actuaries are held accountable through a code of conduct and two sets of professional standards.
Standards
- The Code of Professional Conduct identifies actuaries' ethical responsibilities to the public, to clients and employers, and to the actuarial profession. The code requires actuaries to abide by actuarial standards of practice.
- Actuarial standards of practice (ASOPs) help guide actuaries through the sometimes inexact process of producing complete, accurate, and trustworthy work by identifying acceptable procedures and techniques for actuarial practice. These standards, promulgated by the Actuarial Standards Board, are reviewed and updated regularly.
- The Qualification Standards specify educational and experience requirements for actuaries who issue statements of actuarial opinion (SAOs).
Counseling and Discipline
The Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline investigates alleged violations of the standards and the code of conduct and, when appropriate, recommends discipline.
